A traditional  Tanjore painting is done with wood as its base. Here is a brief flowchart on how it goes. On a water proof ply wood, a cloth with some preparation completed. The sketch is drawn. Fine Quality Jaipur stones are placed. these are semi-precious stones, available in different shapes, sizes & colours (Red, Green, White). Muck work done. Gold Foil (Real 22 carat gold leaf) stick over. Colours are painted. Finally framed with Teakwood Frame (Chettinad Plain Frame or Chettinad Mani Frame). This adds another 3-4 inches overall to the painting size.

While, traditional paintings mostly depict only Hindu gods and goddesses, with Krishna being the most popular, more recently, the art has extended to all religions such as Jesus, Mary, Mecca, Mahaveera, Saibaba, Buddha and also non religious subjects like  animals, birds & flowers.
